Ramp Checks Intensified; Problematic Buses Repaired on the Spot

The Jakarta Transportation Agency's Road Transport Terminal Management Unit (UPTAJ) confirmed that roadworthiness inspections, or ramp checks, for intercity buses ahead of Eid have uncovered no fatal violations so far.

There were no findings so far

Jakarta Transportation Agency's UPTAJ Head, Zulkifli said, the ramp checks were conducted by the Motor Vehicle Testing Management Unit (PKB) at several vehicle testing sites.

There were five PKB locations involved in these inspections, namely Ujung Menteng PKB, Pulo Gadung PKB, Cilincing PKB, Kedaung Angke PKB, and Jagakarsa PKB.

He stated that there were two main types of inspections in the ramp check process: core components directly related to safety and supporting vehicle components.

"The core components that are the focus of the inspection included the condition of the tires and the vehicle's braking system. Both components are deemed vital because they were directly related to travel safety and administrative travel documents," he said on Friday (3/13).

Zulkifli stressed that no vehicle would be allowed to run if major components were faulty, due to the risk to passengers. Nevertheless, his team had not uncovered any fatal core issues so far.

"There were no findings so far concerning major issues such as tires or brakes that were of a fatal nature," he stated.

However, checks still revealed some problems with ancillary components like malfunctioning lights and wipers.

To resolve these, UPTAJ partnered with body workshops to allow for on-site repairs.

He believed the partnership allowed buses with ancillary problems to be fixed promptly, ensuring they did not disrupt operational readiness for the Eid homecoming.

"We partnered with body shops to conduct on-site repairs whenever we identified supporting problems like lights or wipers," he stated.

He noted that some bodywork companies had set up repair facilities at several terminals to speed up vehicle maintenance.

These companies included major bus makers like Hino and Mercedes. The presence of on-site technicians was expected to accelerate repairs so that passenger services remained optimal.

"Through these steps, Dishub hoped all buses in operation during the Eid travel season remained roadworthy and safe for passengers," he hoped.
